The word “honor” is defined as “high respect, as for worth, merit, or rank: to be held in high honor”. The Scriptures teach that we are to honor the Son, even as we honor the Father (John 5:23); we are to honor mother and father (Ephesians 6:2-3); we are to honor all men, and the King (I Peter 2:17). It appears quite significant that we are instructed to count elders who rule well to be worthy of “double honor”, which, in context, has to do with support or renumeration. Nonetheless, it is clearly implied that out of respect for our elders, they are to be held in high esteem. But why? First of all, for their work’s sake; secondly, for their willingness to care, shepherd, and feed the souls of the flock; and third, for their willingness to one day give an account, not only of themselves, but, as well, of those under their oversight. What an awesome responsibility that elders have chosen to shoulder, simply out of love for the Chief Shepherd, and for each sheep within their fold!
The question arises then, how do the sheep show their respect; how do they honor these to whom honor is due? Certainly, it is not simply by lip service or just acknowledging the reality of their appointed office. May I suggest that the Scriptures clearly provide the answer. The Hebrews writer, moved by the Holy Spirit, records in Hebrews 13:7, “Remember them who have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their manner of life” and in Verse 17, “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls . . . .” We are to love our under shepherds as we love the Chief Shepherd!
In short, to honor Christ and the elders, we are to remember their lives, follow their faith, obey them, and submit to them. To not do so is to dishonor Christ, our elders, and to reject God’s Word. Our elders whom we honor, collectively and individually, at the Woodstock congregation of the Lord’s church are: David Cravy; Stan Dymtrowitz; John Hicks; Joe Moody; and Rick Reynolds. Honor to whom honor is due! Don’t forget to welcome Joe Moody today as one of our leaders!
